Gerry O'Connor is a banjo player--but he's not a country orbluegrass performer. Yet bluegrass and country (and much more) are part of what he does. O'Connor is known as a traditional Irish folk musician, but he unassumingly enriches the folk tradition by exploring country and bluegrass (both have roots in Irish folk) and jazz. His treatment of trad reels in "The Garrykennedy Set" will delight Irish folk fans, and "Song for P.J". is a lovely, sweet-sad tune worthy of Ry Cooder (recalling his film music), in which early country, ruralblues, and Irish folk are shown to have a lot in common. The jaunty "Temple Bar Jam" sounds like the result of "Minnie the Moocher" visiting Dublin (nice mellow trumpet here). Attention, followers of David Grisman, Tony Trishka and Bela Fleck: there's a new sheriff in town.
