When Mícheál Ó Domhnaill passed away suddenly in July 2006, the world of Irish traditional music lost a quiet hero. Mícheál left a vast musical legacy as musician, singer, producer, composer, collector & arranger: his life is commemorated and celebrated in the CD “Keep ‘er Lit – the songs and music of Mícheál Ó Domhnaill”. This retrospective CD features an attractive 40-page handbook and, as it is a limited edition, is certain to be much sought after by collectors.
Mícheál was a founding member of some of the most influential traditional groups, including Skara Brae, The Bothy Band, Relativity and Nightnoise. Later, Mícheál formed partnerships with musicians like Kevin Burke and Paddy Glackin. “Keep ‘er Lit” is a 15-track collection spanning 30 years of musical history and featuring the afore-mentioned artists. Mícheál sprang from the rich tradition of music and song from Donegal, which he made his own. He also had a love of the music and songs from Scotland and the Western Isles in particular. Mícheál’s innovative guitar style, particularly when accompanying traditional dance music, has been an inspiration to thousands of musicians and is indeed a reference point for traditional Irish music.
All tracks on “Keep ‘er Lit” have been pre-released apart from one previously unheard recording of The Bothy Band playing ‘Lord Franklin’. The Bothy Band is one of the most highly respected traditional groups and this new track is bound to generate much interest among their many fans.
