Irish folk music has produced some outstanding performers over the years, six of whom are celebrated on the late 90s compilation A Woman's Heart. Although they had all emerged from the folk scene of the previous decades, this is a long way from being a traditional album. Only Sharon Shannon really flies the folk flag with the perennially bouncy "Blackbird" and fluent "Coridinio". The rest of the tracks stray closer to the middle of the road and as such reached a huge number of record buyers in Ireland, many of whom continue to remain largely unconvinced by trad music. Eleanor McEvoy is the pick of the bunch (providing the anthemic title track and Latin flavoured "I Hear You Breathing In"), although Dolores Keane comes close with a wonderful rendition of Dougie McLean's "Caledonia". Probably a touch too easy listening for some tastes, but recommended for aficionados of well-crafted music.
