Grammy-winning Irish vocalist Susan McKeown wants to bring depression into the light. Her seventh solo album, “Singing in the Dark,’’ explores creativity and madness. Drawing from poems by Lord Byron, Theodore Roethke, Anne Sexton, Leonard Cohen, Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill and others, McKeown dips into the bleak well of emotional suffering and comes up with a heaping cup of hope. “Singing in the Dark” tackles the discrimination of mental ill-health through the perspectives of artists struggling with depression, mania, and addiction. McKeown brings to this project her fine-tuned sense for song to centuries of striking visions from across the Americas, Ireland and the British Isles.
